Launch of the new Pedestrian Safety Campaign in Collaboration with Beirut Municipality
In 2015, the Internal Security Forces' traffic statistics revealed that over 40% of traffic fatalities in Lebanon are pedestrians.
Scary as this number is, it almost is not surprising considering the absence of the culture of crossing the road responsibly and safely, as well as the scarcity of well-maintained pedestrian crosswalks and facilities.
Aiming to improve this situation, the Municipality of Beirut, Beirut Police, Porsche Club, FIA Foundation, Automobile et Touring Club au Liban and Kunhadi came together to raise awareness on Pedestrian Safety and excessive speed and launch a campaign under the title "Let's Cross The Road Safely".
Coinciding with the international UN Road Safety Week 2017, the launch of this national campaign will take place on May 11 at LeGray Hotel, where over 15 newly-rehabilitated safe crossings will be announced.
Following the conference, awareness brochures will be distributed around the rehabilitated safe crossings where the police will be explaining to both drivers and pedestrians on how to use the safe crossing correctly and why it is vital to respect the speed limits and slow down in areas heavy with pedestrian traffic, especially around crosswalks and schools.
The campaign will include TV video tips that will also be shared on social media, outdoor media, heavy awareness sessions, notably around schools.
