The Chilean midfielder was treated for minor injuries after the accident outside Santiago before being taken away in the back of a police car.

Arturo Vidal has been arrested on suspicion of drink driving after smashing his Ferrari in a late night car crash.

The Chilean midfielder was traveling home from a casino on a highway south of Santiago when he lost control of his vehicle causing extensive damage to the front and causing the airbags to deploy.

Vidal, currently back in his home country for the Copa America, was then taken to San Luis de Buin hospital where he was treated for minor injuries.

His wife, who was alongside him in the car, also wasn't seriously hurt.

Local footage then showed Vidal being taken away from the hospital in the back of a police car for questioning.

"The driver of the red vehicle was under the influence of alcohol," Chilean police colonel Ricardo Gonzalez said after the incident.

Vidal posted a message on social media confirming the accident and reassuring that he and his family were unhurt.

"Hello, today I was in a traffic accident, it wasn't my fault," he said. "I'm fine, my family's fine, thank you for everything."

Vidal is Chile's top scorer at the tournament having netted three times already including a brace in their 3-3 draw with Ecuador last week.

Their next game is on Friday against Bolivia.

Under-20s coach Jose Sulantay condemned Vidal's actions and coach Jorge Sampaoli for allowing it to happen.

"It's very serious to let this happen right in the middle of the Copa America," he told CNN Chile.

"This kind of stuff doesn't happen [when they're playing] in Europe. I don't understand coach Jorge Sampaoli and I don't understand Vidal."
