Kunhadi Donates Helmets to ISF on Its Fifth Anniversary
The Daily Star- BEIRUT: The road-safety NGO Kun Hadi has presented the Internal Security Forces with 800 motorcycle helmets, to mark the group’s fifth anniversary.
The announcement was made Thursday night at a ceremony in Beirut, where the NGO and officials from several ministries and the Red Cross gathered to pay tribute to the association’s achievements over the last five years.
The NGO decided to follow up last year’s donation of 1,200 helmets to motorcycle drivers with a gift this year to ISF personnel, so that “they can be an example” for the public, according to Kun Hadi president Fadi Gebran.
Both donations were made possible by Bank al-Mawarid.
Gebran commended the Interior Ministry’s recent pledge to clamp down on illegal motorcycle riding in the capital.
“When this decision is fully implemented, it will go a long way to treating the problem of traffic chaos, and have a positive impact on the nerves of drivers,” Gebran said.
On behalf of the interior minister, Brigadier Joseph Dwaihi of the ISF noted that “accidents are not, as they say, a case of being ‘an accident,’ since 85 percent of them are due to human [error], because of speed and the failure to respect driving” regulations.
The attendees also heard about the NGO’s achievements since its founding, which was inspired by the death in a road accident of Gebran’s son Hadi.
In 2007, the group focused on educating young people about the need to wear seat belts. This was followed by the producing of public awareness campaign materials warning against driving under the influence.
