UNIFIL and Kunhadi conduct road safety campaign for children
Children at three schools in south Lebanon participated in a road safety demonstration, organized by multiple UNIFIL divisions – Civil Affairs, Transport and Force Provost Marshall (FPM). ??The campaign, held at schools in Naqoura, Rmeich and Yarin, included both indoor and outdoor sessions where children, aged six to ten, were introduced to important road safety parameters such as traffic rules, road signage and zebra crossings. ??The indoor sessions were led by Ms Lena Gebran, VP of Kunhadi, an NGO advocating road safety in Lebanon. Emergency medical attention at a 'traffic accident' was demonstrated by the Lebanese Red Cross. UNIFIL's Transport and FPM staff introduced the importance of wearing seatbelts and obeying traffic lights during a drive around the school campus. ??The campaign is the third and final phase of a larger road safety awareness program that was inaugurated by UNIFIL in 2013 and forms part of the UN’s global efforts to reduce traffic fatalities and improve road safety. Traffic accidents pose a serious threat to global health and impact negatively on socio-economic progress and sustainable development.
