Road tragedies should not become a part of daily life
The World Health Organization expects fatalities and disabilities caused by terrible epidemics such as Malaria, Tuberculosis and HIV to be surpassed in 2020 by a rising human-driven global epidemic: road traffic injuries.
Despite Road Traffic injuries and fatalities being preventable by a safer driver behavior, road traffic injuries are still the leading cause of death of young Lebanese aged between 15 years – 29 years.
A tragedy fell upon the citizens of Jezzine-Baalbak, beginning July, when a car collided with a motorcycle driven by 12-year-old cousins Rida Ali Salem Berro and Daoud Yaaqoub Berro causing their immediate death.
17-year-old Jana Mohammad from Dhour El-Hawa passed away earlier this month when SUV she was driving rolled over on the infamous “Death Turn” between Cosba and Bserma. Her friend Angie who was in the passenger seat was rushed to the emergencies. Angie was preparing for her wedding set for the end of July.
On July 6, Zeinab El-Roumy (19 years old) and her younger brother Mohammad El-Roumy (7 years old) from Ghassa’iya were killed in a horrific crash on Ghassa’iya – Kawthariyyat Siyyad main road when the SUV their old brother Hady (20 years old) was driving rolled over
Two days later, on the evening of July 8, 15-year-old Ali Jamal Hamadi from Kfarhatta lost control over the Jeep he was driving causing it to spin and overturn for a long distance, causing the young man’s death.
Ali was back from abroad to visit his mother during the month of Ramadan.
Traffic deaths should not become a “part of our daily life”. Every driver and road user can, and has to, play an active role in improving road safety in Lebanon by simply adopting a safer behavior.
