Tips
Driving in Snowy Weather
Before your trip:
- Check road conditions and weather forecast
- Leave earlier to allow extra time to get to your destination
- Know what your car can and cannot do in snow
- Inform others of your itinerary
Driving:
- Keep the windows clear
- Use the seatbelt
- Drive with lights on- but do not use high beams as they only reflect snow/fog and worsen visibility
- Turn cruise control off when driving in snow or wet road
- Drive slower than the speed limits
- Maintain a safety distance between you and vehicles in front of you
- Turn on the flashers in case of fog or extreme weather conditions
In case of skidding:
- Don’t panic
- Slowly take your foot off the gas pedal
- Do NOT pull the brakes. If your foot was already on the brakes, gently release them
- Gently steer your vehicle in the direction that the rear end is taking: if the rear end of your car is moving to the left, steer to the left, if it moved to the right, steer gently and slowly to the right
If you get stuck in snow:
- Straighten the wheels
- Accelerate slowly
- Avoid spinning the tires
- Use sand or cinders under the wheels
