Total Braking Distance
Total braking distance is the distance your vehicle travels from the moment the hazard appears ahead until your vehicle comes to a complete stop. It’s the compilation of distances travelled during the 4 phases of stopping a vehicle:
1. Perception and Identification of a road hazard: e.g. crash ahead
2. Decision-making of appropriate maneuver: e.g. braking
3. Start maneuver: e.g. pulling the brakes
4. Maneuver-completion time: e.g. vehicle stops
To protect yourself, always maintain a “Safety Distance” by applying the “Two Second Rule”.
