Decade of Action Lebanon 2013

Seeing that the toll of global traffic fatalities have reached 1.3 million yearly and are expected to rise till 1.9 million in 2020, Nations world wide decided to take action. And on May 11, 2011, the Decade of Action (DOA) for Road Safety 2011-2020 was launched by the United Nations in more than 100 countries. The global objective is to prevent five million traffic deaths globally by 2020.

Traffic fatalities in Lebanon have been projected to increase in this decade (2011 - 2020) from 565 to 1,130 yearly.

Such a reduction can only be achieved with united efforts of public awareness and strict law enforcement and will result in preventing the death of 3,000 people across 10 years.

Kunhadi has launched the DOA Lebanon in 2011, in line with the rest of the nations taking part of this campaign, and has re-launched it again this year, 2013, with the global theme of Pedestrian Safety with the focus of Pedestrian Visibility.

Earlier this year, Lebanese-Spanish F3 champion Noel Jammal became Kunhadi’s ambassador for road safety.
Being a Lebanese F3 champion and always striving to put Lebanon’s name on the map, Jammal also wanted to create a positive change in his country and so he has decided to join hands with us.

After the New Year’s Eve campaign, Jammal took part in our DOA 2013, to urge drivers not to exceed the speed limit and to be reminded that in life "the finish line has a different, more dangerous meaning."

As part of this campaign, during the road safety week (May 12 – May 17), Kunhadi re-visited schools where we have previously installed safe crossings, to remind the students why and how to use the safe crossing, of course, while always being visible to drivers, be it during the day or at night.

Kunhadi volunteers were also present on Beirut Waterfront, where many go to cycle or work out, to inform them of the importance of being visible and to tell them more about the danger or drunk and distracted driving.

The volunteers also distributed fluorescent jackets to all cyclists to keep them visible at night
