Driving in Winter

Before your trip:

  • Take your car for maintenance check-up
  • Make sure your tires pressure is at a suitable level (not too high or too low) as they improve driving safety by providing better traction, braking and control.
  • In winter check the air pressure regularly as it decreases in cold weather
  • Ensure that windshield wipers function efficiently Replace them if they are old or worn-out
  • Ensure that your vehicle always has sufficient amount of antifreeze rated for the coldest weather

Driving:
  • Wear the seat-belt
  • Turn the headlights on at all times; this makes your vehicle more visible. It facilitates to other drivers to see you and you to see them.
  • In case of fog, use fog-lights as regular light reflects on the fog and make visibility difficult
  • Drive slower than the speed limit. If your speed is under control, you'll be able to maintain control of your vehicle
  • Keep a safety distance between you and the vehicle in front of you to avoid a collision should you have to pull the brakes suddenly on a slippery surface
  • Keep your cool and calm nerves if your car started sliding. Do NOT pull the brakes when your car slides, but slowly take your foot off the gas and turn the steering wheel in the direction that the car has taken.
  • If you are surrounded by snow, straighten your wheels and press the gas bit by bit without letting the wheels turn quickly in one place.
  • Don’t throw garbage from your car to avoid being stuck in potholes during in winter
